Why We Need to Worry About Mosquitoes Even Today

Mosquito Feeding

Singapore has seen a rapid increase of dengue cases in 2020 as compared to a year ago. There have been 4,000 cases reported thus far, about twice the number of cases reported within the same period one year ago.

According to the NEA, the warmer months from June to October will likely observe a higher transmission of dengue due to the accelerated development of the Aedes mosquito and shorter incubation period.

Therefore proactive measures must be taken to manage the mosquito population before things could get worse in the later half of 2020.

While mosquitoes are unable to transmit the virus directly, having your health compromised by dengue risks will weaken your body’s immunity system and make you more susceptible to the lurking virus of COVID-19.

5 Different Health Diseases Mosquitoes Spread

1.   Zika

    • Symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes

    • Real danger affects pregnant women and their babies as it is linked to a birth defect called microcephaly, which causes small heads and brain damage

    • Mosquitoes are responsible for the spread of this disease in many parts of the world including Brazil and Southeast Asia

2.   Dengue

    • Symptoms include rash, dever, headache, easy bruising, and bleeding gums

    • In more serious cases, it leads to hemorrhagic fever which can cause death

    • The only vaccine approved by the FDA is for use in children aged 9 to 16 years who have already been infected with the dengue virus to help prevent getting the disease again

3.   Malaria

    • Nearly half of the world’s population is at risk of catching this disease

    • Symptoms include fever, headache, chills and vomiting

    • Most cases occur in sub-Saharan Africa, South America, South Asia and other regions

4.   Yellow Fever

    • Symptoms include making your skin look yellowish but less serious infections will give you a headache, backache, chills and vomiting

    • There is an available vaccine to prevent it so it is important to get one if you travel to places in Africa and Latin America where mosquitoes spread it

5.   Chikungunya

    • Mild symptoms include rash, headache, nausea, and fatigue

    • However, you will feel a severe joint pain

    • The disease is found in Asia and India and there is no cure but people can recover after an uncertain amount of time ranging from months to years

Importance of Preventing Diseases to Occur

To prevent the transmission of such diseases, the mosquito population must be kept at bay. The most effective way to control the mosquito population is to prevent breeding.

Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water commonly found in discarded containers, water storage containers, choked drains, roof gutters or ground puddles.

It is especially important to practise good and regular housekeeping such as, discarding these containers properly and clear choked drains and roof gutters regularly.

For mosquito breeding habitats that cannot be permanently cleared, a competent pest control operator should be engaged to look out for them and treat them with insecticides to prevent breeding.

Pestbusters offers three different types of mosquito control methods to ensure that an environment is safe from mosquitos.

1.   Larviciding

      • The chemical Larvicide will be used to destroy the mosquito larvae and eventually the entire population over time

      • By understanding the mosquito’s life cycle and habitat, we can target the right place at the best time to effectively eliminate these pests

2.   BTI

      • We will make use of a specially formulated biological agent to specifically target the mosquito larvae within 2-24 hours with ruthless efficiency

      • The larvae will ingest the agent through filter feeding and results in their death within a day

3.   Misting

    • A safe and eco-friendly alternative to fogging

    • The tiny droplets of chemicals will coat the surrounding plants without having adverse effects on them

    • Mosquitoes that feed on the plant sap will be killed when they come into contact with the misting chemicals
